      Segunda Natureza

      Segunda Natureza

In the exhibition Segunda Natureza, the artist Christus Nóbrega makes a cut of his artistic research, bringing together works that make it possible to reflect on the history of ourselves, from the questioning of what we propose to create as a legacy. The works were produced between 2012 and 2016 and cover image research in the interface with other disciplinary fields such as botany, medicine and technology. Each of the series presented here was based on specific research assumptions. They deal with the archeology of family memories, the journey of the journey as an artistic method, the book as a metaphor of protection and refuge for knowledge itself and the power of collective disciplinary partnerships of a techno-biological nature. This is the case of the Shroud (2013), in which the artist developed with a team of doctors and chemists an inkjet print cartridge with his own blood to print ritual protection symbology plants, problematizing state relations of power over the body .

Photography, video, technological art and installations are among the possibilities of Christus Nóbrega’s artistic production. In this exhibition, the works seem to condense a tension on the human condition historically constituted. This is because it must be emphasized that the concept of second nature reflects on a predominantly historical nature posed by the self-conscious, ie free, human subject.

The notion starts from the debate between the state of nature and the state of the human spirit. On the one hand we have a condition that manifests itself in physical space, in a repetitive and determinate course, with no possibility of change, and in which daily necessity prevails, that is, of first nature. As posited by Hegel’s philosophy, there is another second nature circumstance which concerns everything that the objective spirit, as a human being, poses by means of his own creation. In this way, we can reflect here on the facts that are based on the course of time, and about art as history and, historically recognized, it is in turn the realization of freedom in the world.
